When Shawn Kelly(Animator at ILM ,worked on Star Wars, Transformers and so many ) were asked ,

How would you place the following qualifications in order of importance and why?: Work Experience, Degree, and Portfolio.

His answer :
" I would rate it like this:

A. Portfolio/Reel
B. Attitude
C. Experience
D. Degree

If your demo reel rocks, and they can see your enthusiasm in an interview and feel like they can work with you well and that you're eager to learn -- those things are a jillion times more important than experience or any degree.

Occasionally a job will, for whatever reason, want you to have a specific amount of feature film experience, but other than those cases, it's 90% your reel and 10% your attitude, as far as I'm concerned. The reel gets you noticed and does your "showing off" for you, your interview gets you hired. You could have the best reel in town and if you go into an interview like Mr. Cockypants and you think you own the world and they owe you a job and you explain how lucky they'd be if you choose to work for their company.... well - good luck at your next interview, because you're not getting that job at ILM or Pixar or any of the major places. Not with an attitude like that..."

if we have enough passion and patience to go through various phases like story-boarding, animating, rigging, rendering and REWORKING on your demo-reel, I don't think that any more passion and patience is needed to get placed in good studio.

Though Animation is entertainment industry, needs lot of initial investment so recession will definitely leave traces on it. Its good that Disney have not cut down their employees. So by method of induction we can say that all over the world Animation industry is at much safer position than others.

So Animators must care about their demo-reel than placement until; World War 3!!!

As we are talking about making and being the best .. i found this in my "Time of your life" journal , and thought it will be worth sharing ..

If you think 99.9 % is good enough , then .......

1. 2 million documents will be lost by IRS this year
2. 22000 checks will be deducted from wrong bank accounts in the next 60 mins
3. 12 babies will be given to the wrong parents each day.
4. 2,488,200 books will be shipped in the next 12 months with the wrong cover
5. 2 plane landings daily at O'Hare International Airport in Chicago will be unsafe.
6. 5,515,200 cases of soft drinks produced in the next 12 months will be flatter than bad tire
7. 107 incorrect medical procedures will be performed by the end of the day today .

If you think 99.9 % is good enough , then .....think again !

i would like to thank the writer for mentioning my name(uday).

Even i beleive in Sit James Baxter words but when it comes to reality i guess everyone knows that things are not so black and white.

i know a few friends who passed out of a reputable animation institute in 2008. none of them got a job. By no means am i saying that they were the best students but their works were pretty good for freshers. Companies never wanted freshers. everyone wants experienced people. god only knows where freshers are supposed to learn.

to make things worse even the best animation institutes dont have good teachers. Teachers without production experience are unable to stand as inspirational leaders for young students.

amidst all this chaos, there comes a company offering jobs where one has to pay to apply for a job (INR 3150 as registration fees). Are Studios looking out for alternative methods to earn money or is it a mode of filtration to employ only the ones who can afford it?

animation industry in India seems a bit gloomy to me.

My only suggestion to people looking out for a job - Make sure your demo reel is so good that companies will regret not having chosen you. Thats the only way of standing out of the crowd.
